History of table tennis
Table tennis was popularised by rich Victorians, who played with makeshift bats and nets. In the early 1900s proper bats, tables and nets were developed. The game was exported to China, who took it up with great passion. Indeed, China is now the home of table tennis and the nation dominates the sport.
The World Table Tennis Championships was set up in 1926 and included competitors from England, Wales, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Hungary. It was Hungary who won the team event, while they also claimed a clean sweep in the men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions.
The World Table Tennis Championships has been held almost every year since. Since 2007 the competition has been split into either individual or team championships, which alternate each year. The team championships feature just two medals, while the individual championships feature five.
World Table Tennis Championships betting
Betting on table tennis is hugely popular during the World Table Tennis Championships. This is where the world’s best players come together to battle it out on the tables. Attention during these tournaments is always peaked and Unibet offers extensive tablet tennis bets and odds on every match.
Indeed, you can bet In Play on every World Table Tennis Championships game. Our live odds react to changes in each match, meaning the art of live sports betting is to time your bets to perfection. Mastering In Play betting is all about timing, judgement and luck. It takes a good amount of practice to know when best to place your live bets — and even then you need luck on your side!
Table tennis at the Olympics
The wider sporting world takes notice of table tennis when it comes to the Olympics. The sport only entered the Olympic movement in 1988, when Korea’s Yoo Nam-kyu beat his compatriot Kim Ki-taik in Seoul to claim men’s singles gold. China’s Chen Jing won the women’s singles title.
Since then China has dominated the competition and Olympics table tennis betting odds always have Chinese competitors at the top of the list! A Chinese man has won the singles gold in five of the last six Olympics (as of 2019). And there has never been an Olympic Games where a Chiense woman didn’t win the table tennis gold. Only two non-Chinese women have even reached the singles final.
In 2008 the Olympic movement created a new medal — the men’s and women’s team event. China have won all six golds in this format, while Germany boast two silvers and two bronzes (as of 2019).
ITTF World Tour betting
Seasonal table tennis is dominated by the ITTF World Tour. The competition runs from January to December each year and features the best male and female players on the planet. Betting on ITTF World Tour brings you closer to the action — and you can live stream table tennis right here with Unibet too!
The beauty of the ITTF World Tour is that it showcases the best players on a regular basis. Players compete for themselves - rather than their countries - and can carve out strong professional careers while travelling the world.
The ITTF World Tour starts in Europe and finishes at the Grand Finals in China. Around 13 instalments of the World Tour take place each year, covering countries from Qatar to Japan, Australia to Sweden. Price money often tips towards £200,000 for each competition, making the ITTF World Tour a lucrative business.
Betting on table tennis involves core markets such as match winner and correct score. But you can also place handicap bets and over/unders. This is where table tennis betting goes into greater detail — yet even inexperienced bettors can easily pick up how to play the odds.
